The fact that some muslims aren’t really sincere enough and not devoted to the religion of Islam has led to massive failure in the effort of reviving the strength of the Muslim Ummah. The muslims are assumed by some to be backward, fanatic, and violent people.
We muslims need to prove these claims are wrong. So I think a simple yet major shift of paradigm is needed to once again put us to the top of the world. Let’s forget first about developing the military or economic strength of the muslim ummah for a while. There are much simpler issues yet important, that need to be observed to ease our path towards success. Let’s view it one by one.
1. Take great care of the prayers
PRAYER is the most important thing a muslim should observe. Prayer is indeed the main differential criterion between a muslim and a non-muslim. In an authentic hadith narrated by Imam Bukhari and Muslim, prayer is the best and lovable deed in the Sight of Allah.
Observing prayers does not only mean to never miss the obligatory (fardh) prayers. It also includes:
- Pray on time, as early as possible!
- Pray congregationally (i.e. jamaah, primarily for men)
- Praying in high concentration (Khusyu’)
Here I would like to emphasize more on attending congregational prayers for we all can see this a common problem in our country. In a hadith, the Prophet s.a.w said: “By Him in Whose Hands my life is, I sometimes thought of giving orders for firewood to be collected, then for proclaiming the Adhan for Salat. Then I would appoint an Imam to lead Salat, and then go to the houses of those who do not come to perform Salat in congregation, and set fire to their houses on them”. This is an authentic hadith narrated by Bukhari and Muslim.
Besides taking "super" attention to the above matters, a good muslim should also, or is highly encouraged, to often perform the sunnah prayers. Allah loves those muslims who prayed to Him in high quality and frequency.
2. Make reading a habit
Reading
is something lacking in our muslim society; this is from my own observation (and this is a reminder for me as well). Many times when we enter any bookstore, whether the bookstore is selling religious books or modern-western books, there are not so many muslims around compared to other shops or other more-fun-to-visit places. Even if there are muslims, not so many are so interested to spend their money on intelectual or beneficial books, compared to their interest on buying games, DVDs or pop magazines. That’s pity, owning books should be dearer to our hearts than owning other worldly materials.
The same scene is also seen in libraries. Libraries shouldn’t be left with so many empty seats around and books left dusted. Some muslims -pardon me if I am wrong- do not seem to like reading educational or beneficial books. This is very worrying indeed, for one of the keys to be successful individually and collectively, is to have vast amount of knowledge, and reading is the primary way of gaining knowledge.
Now ask yourself, how many books you read in a year? Let us make reading books as a common habit.
3. Do not despise each other over differences
One of the reason that is tilting the table of world order to the western world rather than the muslim ummah is due to lack of understanding among the muslims when it comes to differences. Whether they’d be differences in muslim sects (mazhab), political parties or culture; some muslims tend to be bias to one side. These muslims do not have the tendency to evaluate all views fairly based on intelectual reasoning, but rather based on their emotions; and as a consequent these muslims will always incline to one perspective regardless of how true the opposing view would be. Then, disputes might occur between the supporters of the two opposing sides. This is a bad situation, for in the Quran it has already been stated:
“The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy.” (Al-Hujuraat : 10)
The best way for muslims to be successful, strong and unite with each other, is to accept differences, rather than avoiding them. This is because accepting a different opinion is much more easier than avoiding to have different views. We can put forward our own views. We can agree and disagree. We can be agreed and disagreed. It is wrong for us to force other people to agree with our views. Even I am also requesting what is stated in this article should be evaluated, and I do not mind if the readers disagree.
We may not accept an opinion, but we should not reject or disgust the person proposing it. The person should always be tolerated nicely and respected as a muslim brother or sister. Sometimes the differences in opinion are not contradictory at all, rather all are correct and we are free to choose which opinion we prefer. Even if we disagree a view because it is completely wrong and fatal, for example those misleading views stating that ‘wearing hijab (head scarf) for muslimah is not compulsory’, still we have to respond to that opinion nicely and peacefully. Starting off fights of conflicts is not our way of handling differences.
If our view is proven to be wrong, put away our ego, just abandon that erroneous view and accept the correct view. To a good muslim, seeking the truth is really what matters, not winning over a debate. This kind of humble attitude is the secret for success.
A true muslim must always ensure his emotions are always under the control of his sane thinking. So, do not curse nor hate each other for any kind of differences. Being gentle and polite are the correct principles. Keep on talking to the misunderstood people with patience and wisdom. Let not irritation take over. A genuine muslim must always have good manners in everything that he does.
4. Do not be partial-muslims
Partial-muslims are really burning away the good name of Islam. "Thanks" to these partial-muslims, Islam is now greatly misunderstood by so many people, especially the non-muslims. If any of the readers is assuming me as critizing them, please realize that this ‘criticism’ is meant to be constructive, rather than destructive.
It is common that people will assess a religion, isms, or any ideologies based on its followers. The same case implies here, where Islam is judged based on the muslims, and the problem is that in many instances there are muslims who are not sincerely following all the teachings of Islam. This is the group of muslims whom we call partial-muslims. I pray to Allah not to let me or you to fall into this group of muslims.
Partial-muslims are muslims who practice one aspect of Islam but abandoning the other. For example, they prayed five times a day but at the same time they watch illegal things, such as sexy actresses in western movies. They perform the alms (zakah) but at the same time they scold their parents. Some muslim women are going all-out for charity, but hey, where’s their hijab? Why would these muslims do such acts, while to obey Allah in totality is a divine commandment:
“The answer of the Believers, when summoned to Allah and His Messenger, in order that He may judge between them, is no other than this: they say, "We hear and we obey": it is such as these that will attain felicity” (An-Noor: 51)
Two things need to be fixed to ensure the preservation of the good name of Islam. First, muslims must always work hard to be a better muslim every time and place. Second, non-muslims should understand that not all muslims are correctly representing the teachings of Islam.
Islam is a holistic religion. It comprehensively covers all aspects of life, whether it be from the major aspects of worshipping Allah to the tiniest aspect, say, the manners of talking to young children. Islam is a religion that teaches and guides man in all areas of his life. Definitely only the true divine religion teaches everything. So, let us follow Islam fully and we’ll be safe both in this world and the hereafter. Insha Allah.
Islam explains the entire motive of why we live in this world. Islam encourages good manners, from playing with young kids to respecting the elderly, and from greeting others with salam to helping the poor. Islam teaches us not to brag, arrogant, backbite nor bully others. There are many more other beautiful teachings of Islam, but merely because many muslims are taking little attention to it, the whole muslim nation is under severe threat of misconceptions and enmity.
To practice Islam is uncomplicated, but to maintain them is relatively not easy.Maintaining is easy because of the worldly temptations and shaitanic whisperings. So a true muslim admits that Islam is simple in practice but at the same time he does whatever he can to maintain the state of practicing Islam at its fullest. This is the kind of muslim we should all be: the ideal muslims, the ones that the non-muslims should be observing if they want to understand Islam.
Conclusion
The difficulties faced by the muslim ummah today are due to some muslims’ lack of sincere faith and commitment to Islam.
Besides the four things I mentioned above, there are actually many other more important things under the teachings of Islams that the muslims today are not taking serious attention. Nevertheless, I really hope that all of us would take heed of the matters mentioned above, and I also hope that by implementing what has been written in this article we can then be able to find other mistakes of ours that have been overlooked. And Allah knows best!
